    The Princeton Department of Public Works (DPW) may be hiring a full time mechanic. Must have electrical and mechanical knowledge with automated and rear packer garbage trucks, street sweeper, sewer jet, heavy equipment, parks equipment, TIG and MIG welding, and computer scanner trained to troubleshoot and diagnose error codes on police cars as well as other diesel and gasoline vehicles.
     
    Description: Repairs, rebuilds and overhauls assemblies and subassemblies from motor vehicles and equipment, including engines (gasoline and diesel), transmission (manual and automatic), electrical components (alternators, generators, starters), hydraulic components (pumps), repair PTO systems and carburetors. In a garage and/or in the field, performs maintenance and repair on special purpose vehicles and associated equipment, autos, trucks, tractors, power mowers, snow plows, rollers, compressors, spreaders, pumps, jacks, jack hammers, landscaping equipment, shop equipment, tools and accessories. Installs air conditioners and services components such as compressors and condensers. Adjusts brakes, replaces brake linings and pads, repairs hydraulic cylinders, all power train systems and makes other repairs to the brake systems. Overhauls, rebuilds, repairs and services diesel, gasoline and other types of combustion engines, automatic and manual transmissions, heavy duty drive line systems, hydraulic utility systems and controls. Performs preventative maintenance on motor vehicles and equipment, including inspecting safety items, checking for deficiencies, tune-ups, oil changes, lubrication, filter changes, spark plug and point replacement. Changes and repairs tires and inner tubes on cars, trucks, trailers, and other equipment. Welds broken assemblies, subassemblies and/or other parts and performs any blacksmithing tasks as required. Maintains shop and work area in a clean and organized manner. Prepares computerized and written reports and records of time spent, materials and parts used and work completed. Installs and repairs snow plows, spreaders, mechanical claws, chains and other equipment as necessary.  Drives vehicles such as a pickup truck and other equipment to various locations to service disabled motor vehicles. Operates backhoes, loaders and other equipment as necessary. Using diagnosis equipment and perform all levels of preventive maintenance in shop and all sites.  Perform all other work that may be necessary or required.
    Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of varied types of engines and equipment and their operation. Knowledge of mechanical makeup, operation, and installation procedures for all components and systems of vehicles such as engines, transmissions, front and rear-end assemblies, electrical, and hydraulic systems. Ability to use technical manuals, specifications, diagrams, schematics and similar guides to make repairs and modifications to equipment. Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50lbs. by him or herself without any mechanical aids.
    Requirements: Minimum of 2 years proven experience desired, municipal public work experience is a plus.  Written & oral communication skills in English.  Must satisfy employer paid physical, drug screen and criminal background check.  Must have a valid NJ Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in good standing. NJ residency required by State Statute.R.S.52:14-7.
